September 26, 2008
The Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute unveils its Imaging Guided Interventions research platform and the acquisition of two Philips 3T MRI scanners, one to be housed at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and the other at partner Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Kullervo Hynynen of Sunnybrook will work collaboratively with Drs. Laura Curiel and Samuel Pichardo in investigating the use of HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) therapy in treating cancerous tumours.

Dr. John Rowlands receives one of three Cancer Care Ontario Research Chair awards for 2008. Dr. Rowlands will be recruiting a Radiation Oncology clinical scientist to support the translational research agenda at the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute. The grant is worth $500,000.

The Imaging Guided Interventions research program is launched as a major component of the molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics agenda for the Research Institute. High Intensity Focused Ultrasound using MRI is unveiled as the first project within this theme. Project participants include Philips Health Care and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

The first annual general meeting of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute Board of Directors celebrates milestones achieved through the commitment and strength of partnerships. The first annual report is released along with their first corporate strategic plan with an emphasis on molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics.

Dr. Mike Campbell, Duke University, arrives at the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute to begin his work as a Radiochemist and to bring the Biomarker Discovery research theme to life. Dr. Campbell will assist with the commissioning of the Institute’s first cyclotron and radiochemistry facility.

Thunder Bay’s first ever PET-CT research unit arrives and is commissioned at the Regional Cancer Program at TBRHSC.


May 1, 2008
The Advanced Detectors Research Program is launched as the first major component of the molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics agenda for the Research Institute. PET-CT research is unveiled as the first project within this theme.
The project partner is Philips Health Care.

Dr. Mark Poznansky, as Chief Research Officer, is recruited to the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute and introduced to the community.

Scientists Dr. Laura Curiel and Dr. Samuel Pichardo join the Research Institute team as High Intensity Focused Ultrasound experts along with Dr. Alla Reznik, who joins the Research Institute as Thunder Bay’s first ever PET-CT research scientist.

Dr. John Rowlands receives $1,000,000 Ontario Research Fund Grant as the executive team representative of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute. The Research Institute receives the award in partnership with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (lead institution) and several others in Ontario. The grant is in support of the emerging High Intensity Focused Ultrasound research project that is to get underway in Thunder Bay and at Sunnybrook in late 2008.

Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute Board awards a multi-million dollar tender to a Thunder Bay construction company to construct 17,000 sq ft of space at the ICR Discoveries building on Munro Street. This space, in support of the pre-clinical molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics mandate will be available to the new group of research scientists in the fall of 2008.

Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute wins esteemed Cancer Care Ontario Innovation Award for the molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics research program.

Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute is incorporated and the inaugural Board of Directors is announced.


September 6, 2007
The Ontario Government commits to a $14.7 million investment for the research program through the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

Health Minister Tony Clement announces a $14.7 million investment for the molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics research program through FedNor.

Redevelopment begins at 290 Munro Street. Lakehead University, Genesis Genomics and the Lake Superior Centre for Regenerative Medicine move in as tenants and also as future collaborators in new research initiatives.

Dr. John Rowlands of Sunnybrook Research Institute recruited as Founding Scientific Director for the new research program in Thunder Bay.

FedNor and federal Health Minister Tony Clement commit to $2.5 million for the retrofit of the facility at 290 Munro Street, now ICR Discoveries, future home of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute’s collaborative research space.

City of Thunder Bay commits to $5 million in funding for the research program.

A Molecular Imaging and Advanced Diagnostics (formerly the MMRC) research program concept is first presented to City of Thunder Bay City Council, with a request for $5 million in seed funding.
