Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI) has a unique mission - to improve the quality of healthcare through excellence in patient-centred research.
At the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute, the patient is at the start of the research journey, bringing science to life through discovery, early detection, new treatments, and cures. We will pioneer a new standard of excellence in the clinical investigation of novel molecular imaging-based diagnostic technologies for disease prevention, early detection and image-guided treatment.
Scientists and clinicians work together with academic and industry partners to develop tools to efficiently bring molecular imaging and advanced diagnostic technologies to the patient in a research setting. This will happen under three key research themes:
Incorporated in December 2007, the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute is quickly gaining national and international recognition. We have secured more than $50 million in government and industry partner funding and established a board of directors and executive leadership team that include some of the most respected health research minds in Canada. We have recruited and continue to recruit outstanding scientists.
Research here will be done in partnership with Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, with whom we have a joint venture agreement. Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre supported the creation of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute to advance its academic research mandate, strengthening its role as a leader in healthcare innovation and delivery. Pre-Clinical Research will be done at the ICR Discoveries Building at 290 Munro Street, and Translational Research will be done at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Our other partners in science include Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Cancer Care Ontario, Lakehead University, Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Confederation College, and industry partner Philips Healthcare.
The Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute will inject unprecedented capacity for Northwestern Ontario to revolutionize patient care through research. Clinical and basic scientists integrate with clinical teams at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, transforming the hospital into a vibrant academic health sciences centre with leading-edge patient care, research and education - the heart of its mandate.
Treating patients at the earliest stages of disease represents a critical path toward improved health outcomes for patients and significant cost-savings for the health system in general.
The primary focus today is on cancer, one of the leading health concerns in Northwestern Ontario. Future expansion will move to other areas where disease is prevalent, such as cardiac care and neurology. In a decade, the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute hopes to make tremendous advances in early detection and treatment that will not only benefit residents of Northwestern Ontario but indeed the entire world.
We have deliberately established a patient-centred research focus that is market oriented, working in partnership with industry and investors to ensure that innovation and discovery reach patients in our communities and around the world.
This is what we mean by “Bringing Discovery to Life.”
